The Queen visits Margate ... David Kerr Photographer ...

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has paid a visit to Margate’s Turner Contemporary Gallery, where she met with gallery Director Victoria Pomery, Chair John Kampfner along with other key members of staff. She was then given a gallery tour, on which she was introduced to star guests – Deputy Director of Tate Alex Beard, artist Tracey Emin, and architect Sir David Chipperfield.

Amusingly, the Queen appeared to have never heard of world famous YBA Tracey Emin, asking her whether she exhibited ‘internationally as well as in Margate?’ Prince Philip similarly put his foot in it, apparently being overheard saying, ‘I shudder to think what’s in the gallery’, after being shown a collage of work by children inspired by the art on show.

Pearly Kings and Queens, known as pearlies, are an organised charitable tradition of working class culture in London, England.
The practice of wearing clothes decorated with pearl buttons originated in the 19th century. It is first associated with Henry Croft, an orphan street sweeper who collected money for charity. At the time, "Costermongers" (London Street traders) were in the habit of wearing pearl buttons along the seams of their trousers. Croft adapted this to create the 'pearly suit' to draw attention to himself and aid his fund-raising activities. In 1911 an organised pearly society was formed in Finchley, north London.

The 2011 Broadstairs Dickens Festival runs from Saturday 18th June to Friday 24th June inclusive.

Welcome to Broadstairs ... Earthing !

Broadstairs is a coastal town on the Isle of Thanet in the Thanet district of east Kent, England, about 80 miles (130 km) south-east of London. It is part of the civil parish of Broadstairs and St Peter's, which includes St. Peter's and had a population in 2001 of about 24,000. Situated between Margate and Ramsgate, it is one of Thanet's seaside resorts, known as the "Jewel in Thanet's crown". The town's crest motto is Stella Maris ("Star of the Sea"). The name derives from a former flight of steps in the chalk cliff, which led from the sands up to the 11th-century shrine of St Mary on the cliff top.

The hot weather brought out the crowds at Broadstairs beach today. I love watching the visitors struggle down to the beach with kids, pushchairs, inflatable boats, food hampers, wind breaks, spades, buckets and balls. The most popular activity is "hole digging", leaving the beach looking like the surface of the Moon.
